Learning a trade: why feedback matters.
Originally published
Watching an experienced person work can spark curiosity. Learning a trade also means practising under supervision, hearing feedback and demonstrating what you can do.
Progress you can demonstrate
Skilled Trades Ontario explains that 310B apprentices develop workplace skills with a skilled worker or trainer. As an apprentice demonstrates the required skills, the sponsor or trainer signs the relevant sections of the apprenticeship training standard.
That makes feedback a useful part of learning. It connects a task you have observed with the skills you still need to develop.
A question to bring to a mentor
Try asking: “What would you look for to know that I understand this task?”
Listen carefully, write down the feedback and ask which supervised learning opportunity would help you next. This is a conversation starter, not permission to carry out a repair independently.
