Before a plastic repair, ask what the part is made of.
Originally published
A scratch on a bumper is easy to spot. Knowing what the part is made of takes a closer look. That is one question worth bringing to an Ontario 310B shop visit.
Start with the material
Skilled Trades Ontario’s 310B curriculum includes identifying plastics and considering the damage, its location and the manufacturer’s repair recommendations. Two parts that look alike may need different decisions.
Ask before assuming
Ask your host: “What material is this?” Then ask: “Where do you check the manufacturer’s instructions?” Let a trained person explain the reasoning. Follow the shop’s safety directions; this article is not a repair lesson.
Take the question further
If you are in high school, bring your questions to your guidance or co-op teacher. Ask about ways to explore 310B. A shop visit does not register an apprentice or automatically earn apprenticeship credit.
