310B: a measurement needs a reference.
Originally published
A number on a screen can look precise. Understanding what it means takes another question: what is it being compared with? That question opens a different view of Ontario’s 310B trade—one built around careful observation and checking.
Look beyond the number
The 310B curriculum includes measuring systems for vehicle frames and unibody structures. It connects measurement with finding structural misalignment and consulting the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Reference points and repair tolerances are part of that learning. This is an introduction to the trade, not a guide to measuring or repairing a vehicle.
Ask about the reference
During an arranged, supervised shop visit, ask: “Where does the reference for this measurement come from?” Let your host explain the information and equipment they are using. Stay in the designated visitor area and leave equipment operation to authorized people.
Turn curiosity into a conversation
If you enjoy comparing results and asking why, note that interest for a conversation with a teacher or guidance counsellor. You do not need to arrive with all the answers. Jordan’s fictional shop visit can help you start. Exploring the work does not register an apprenticeship or establish training credit.
