310B: make the training record meaningful.
Originally published
In an Ontario 310B apprenticeship, a training record should mean more than a page of signatures. It connects learning with the skills an apprentice can demonstrate. A useful conversation begins with the specific training objective.
Start with the training standard
Skilled Trades Ontario identifies the Apprenticeship Training Standard as the record of essential workplace skills. The sponsor or trainer signs the relevant sections when the apprentice demonstrates the required skills and meets the training objectives.
Ask a specific question
After supervised practice, ask: which objective did we work on, what could I demonstrate, and what still needs practice? These questions can help a learner and trainer discuss the next step without rushing the record.
Keep the meaning clear
A conversation, observation or personal note is not itself a signed training objective or trade qualification. Confirm the appropriate recording process with your sponsor or trainer. Supporting workers includes making learning records understandable.
