310B: why damage assessment comes first.
Originally published
A car arrives with visible damage. Before reaching for a tool, there is a problem to understand. Skilled Trades Ontario includes damage analysis and estimating in 310B in-school training.
Start with questions
During a supervised shop visit, ask: “What information do you need before deciding how to repair this vehicle?” Let the technician explain what they inspect and why. Stay in the visitor area and follow the shop’s safety instructions.
Notice the reasoning
An estimate is a plan of the expected work and cost. Ask how the findings shape that plan. You do not need to know every part name to notice careful questions, clear records and an explanation of the next step.
Take your interest further
If you enjoy investigating a problem, this side of 310B may interest you. Write down one question for your teacher, guidance counsellor or apprenticeship sponsor. A visit or video helps you explore; it does not prove a trade skill or automatically earn apprenticeship credit.
