310B: choosing a hand tool starts with a question.
Originally published
Watch someone reach for a hand tool in a collision-repair shop. The choice may look quick, but there is knowledge behind it. That is a good place for a curious learner to begin.
Understand the purpose
Ontario’s 310B curriculum covers the purpose, function, operation and maintenance of hand tools. It also considers tool sizes and features, including imperial and metric sizes. Learning about a tool means understanding more than its name.
Ask before you reach
During an arranged, supervised shop visit, ask: “What makes this tool suitable for this task?” You could also ask how its condition is checked and where it is stored. Follow your host’s visitor rules and leave tool use to authorized people.
Take one question forward
Write down one unfamiliar tool or term. Discuss it with a teacher, guidance counsellor or apprenticeship sponsor. A visit can help you explore your interests; formal apprenticeship registration and decisions about training credit are separate steps. Jordan’s story offers another way to start that conversation.
